जब मैं था तब हरि नहीं, अब हरि है मैं नाहिं।
सब अंधियारा मिट गया, जब दीपक देख्या माहिं॥
When I was, then Hari (God) was not, Now Hari is and I am not
All the darkness dissolved, When I saw the light within.
Kabir’s words remind us that the journey inward dissolves the ego and brings light to our being. This essence of self-inquiry and expression forms the heart of ‘Doha Darpan’—a space where dance becomes a mirror, reflecting the wisdom of Bhakti and Sufi saints through Kathak.
Doha Darpan
Reflecting Mystics through Kathak
What is ‘Doha- Darpan’?
‘Doha Darpan’ is a space where we deeply connect and engage with the timeless wisdom of Bhakti and Sufi saints through the expressive language of Kathak. Saints like Kabir, Meera, Surdas, Bulleshah and many more showed us the middle way—a path of balance, simplicity, and profound self-awareness and their wisdom remains as relevant today as it was centuries ago. To bring this wisdom into movement, we use Kathak—an Indian classical dance form that bridges storytelling, rhythm, and expression.
As a Classical Dance Practitioner, Kathak has always been a powerful medium for me to express, connect, and heal. It cultivates awareness of the body and mind while allowing emotions to flow freely and meaningfully. Through this, we will explore:
-
Embodied Expression: Engaging with mystic poetry through movement.
-
Emotional Awareness: Releasing and processing emotions through dance.
-
Connection to the Present: Cultivating mindfulness and self-awareness.
-
Community and Reflection: A shared space where multiple interpretations enrich the collective experience.
Each session of ‘Doha Darpan’ explores a verse from one of these saints, using Kathak to connect with their wisdom exploring its meaning through dance and personal reflection. The movement brings their words to life, creating a space for personal reflection and emotional release.

The Essence of Bhakti and How it relates to us
The saints of the Bhakti period spoke to us in a language of simplicity and truth. They helped us uncover the deeper realities of life, not just through their words, but through the way they lived their truths. ‘Doha Darpan’ seeks to bring their words to life by incorporating dance as a way to express and internalize this wisdom.
Each participant’s unique life experiences and understanding will contribute to the rich collective space of the workshop, fostering deep connections and growth.
The Flow of a Session

We begin with a moment of stillness, tuning into our breath and presence.
-
Introduction to a saint’s verse—understanding its layers and meaning.
-
Exploring emotions and expressions through guided Kathak-based movement.
-
Creating space for personal interpretation and group interaction.
-
Closing with reflections—how does this wisdom relate to our own journey?
Each session of Doha Darpan revolves around a saint’s verse, inviting us to connect with their wisdom through movement, expression, and reflection—while exploring how it resonates within our own lives.
